Cebu’s BRT System gets $ 141m World Bank Nod

Cebu’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System was given World Bank approval which brings closer to realization, Cebu City’s first mass transport system.

It is noted that project impact will not only benefit Cebu but the whole country as well.   The BRT project is aimed at reducing Cebu’s pollution, lesser traffic, creating jobs and making the place attractive to investors.

The new BRT will improve the mobility of 330,000 passengers daily and is the 2nd big banner infra project, of the Aquino administration in the Visayas.

The WB package is composed of two loans :   $116 million from the lender itself, plus $25 million more from the Clean Technology Fund (CTF).   This augments the $ 87.5 million earmarked by the state.

As learned, BRT cost is lower than the cost of construction and maintenance of overhead train lines in Metro Manila.   Manila’s Light Rail Transit Line 1’s extension to Cavite, involves the construction of 11.7 kilometers of new overhead tracks and several new stations, costing P65 million pesos.

Kindly note that attributed to BRT’s cost effectiveness is the utilization of local labor and materials.

BRT runs on its own dedicated lanes using buses, making it simpler/cheaper to construct, operate and maintain.
