Some 2,500 world class triathlon athletes (and show biz personalities) are converging in Cebu, for a test of endurance, assessing roads, confirming routes and acclimatizing to the Philippines’ tropical weather, to be completely ready for August 3, Sunday’s IRONMAN 70.3 Race.
Cebu has been hosting Ironman 70.3 Philippines for three (3) years now.
Camarines Sur hosted the race from 2009 to 2011. With a mere 583 tri-athletes who signed up in 2009 at Camsur, this year’s registration soared to 2,500 participants from 40 nations !
The competition will start with a 1.9-kilometer swim race, followed by a 90-kilometer bike race and a 21-kilometer run.
The bike route starts from Shangrila Mactan Resort at Lapulapu City to Talisay City.
As this is a rare event, expected is a big turn-out of spectators cheering for their favourite tri-athletes. No worry for entrance tickets ! Lining up along the streets where athletes pass, and possibly check on the TV coverages for the swim spectacle, shall give them a free view.
Traffic Advisory on Sunday, August 3 is as follows :
UK’s Former F1 world champion Jenson Button arrived Thursday of last week yet, to make a 2nd bid and will be joining the 30 to 34 age bracket. Likewise, James Thurston, Tom Dudden and other triathletes are checking the routes and adjusting to the humid climate.
Incidentally, Iron Kids -a triathlon for children– will be conducted Saturday, 2nd of August. Routes are established at Angasil Road up to Punta Engano, which then will be closed to traffic from 5 AM to 10 AM. Iron Kids will sport a 9-kilometer bike race and 2-kilometer run race.
